Is ChatGPT more expensive on iPhone? No, and here is the proof

No. ChatGPT costs the same whether you subscribe in the iPhone app or on chatgpt.com. On 6 November 2026 the US App Store listed Go at $8.00, Plus at $19.99 and the three Pro plans at $100.00, $200.00 and $500.00 a month, and OpenAI lists the same plans at $8, $20, $100, $200 and $500. The one-cent gap on Plus is rounding to Apple's price points. That makes ChatGPT the opposite of Claude, whose Max plans cost 25% more in the app.

ChatGPT Plus: $19.99 in the app, $20 on the web

It is the first thing people assume about any subscription bought on an iPhone: Apple takes a cut, so the app must cost more. For ChatGPT it is not true.

The prices, side by side

US prices, checked on 6 November 2026. The in-app prices are the ones Apple lists on the ChatGPT App Store page under In-App Purchases; the web prices come from OpenAI’s help center pages on Plus and the three Pro plans, and from its Go announcement.

Plan In the iPhone app On chatgpt.com Difference
Go, monthly $8.00 $8 same
Plus, monthly $19.99 $20 one cent less in the app
Pro 100, monthly $100.00 $100 same
Pro 200, monthly $200.00 $200 same
Pro 500, monthly $500.00 $500 same

The cent on Plus is Apple’s price grid, which ends in .99. Over a year you save twelve cents by subscribing in the app, which is not a reason to do anything.

Pro became three plans during 2026, and the App Store listing carries all three, so the in-app menu matches the web menu plan for plan. The listing also sells usage credit packs; those are top-ups for Codex and ChatGPT Work, not a plan, and the question here is the plan price.

The exception that makes this worth saying

Most subscriptions behave like ChatGPT. When we compared 22 subscriptions, 19 cost the same in the app and on the web. The three that did not are the reason the question keeps coming up: Claude Max costs 25% more in the app, X Premium 37% more and YouTube Premium 31% more.

So the two AI assistants take opposite decisions. OpenAI absorbs Apple’s commission on every plan; Anthropic passes it on for Max and for Pro paid yearly, while keeping Pro monthly at $20 in both places.

Outside the United States

OpenAI prices by country and bills in local currency in some of them, so the US numbers do not travel. The check is the same everywhere: open the ChatGPT page on your country’s App Store, scroll to In-App Purchases, and compare with the plan page at chatgpt.com in the same currency. In Spain, on 6 November 2026, the App Store listed Go at 7,99 €, Plus at 22,99 € and Pro 100 at 102,99 € (Pro 200 at 229,00 €, Pro 500 at 509,99 €) against 8 €, 23 € and Pro from 103 € on chatgpt.com, which is the same rounding story.

App or web, then

Since price is a tie, pick by where you want to manage it.

  • In the app: Apple bills you. The plan appears in Settings, your name, Subscriptions, with the renewal date and a cancel button, and Apple’s refund rules apply.
  • On the web: OpenAI bills you. You manage and cancel it at chatgpt.com, and it never appears in your Apple subscriptions list, like every subscription Apple does not bill.

Both work on every device you sign in to, and switching later means cancelling one and subscribing again on the other.

Keeping track either way

A web-billed ChatGPT plan leaves no trace on your phone, and an app-billed one sits in a list most people never open. If you are not sure what subscriptions you have across both kinds, that takes twenty minutes to find out. Kelo keeps both kinds on iPhone, without connecting to your bank, and warns you before each charge. Kelo is not affiliated with OpenAI.

Loose ends

How much is the ChatGPT app on iPhone?

The app is free to download. The paid plans sold inside it cost, on the US App Store on 6 November 2026, $8.00 a month for Go, $19.99 for Plus and $100.00, $200.00 or $500.00 for the three Pro plans. They are the same plans OpenAI sells at $8, $20, $100, $200 and $500 on chatgpt.com.

Is ChatGPT Plus cheaper on the website than in the app?

No. Apple lists ChatGPT Plus at $19.99 a month on the US App Store page of the ChatGPT app, and OpenAI's help center lists it at $20 a month on the web. The cent of difference is rounding, not a markup. Checked on 6 November 2026.

How much is ChatGPT Pro in the iPhone app?

$100, $200 or $500 a month depending on the Pro plan (Pro 100, Pro 200 or Pro 500), the same as on the web. The US App Store listing shows the three in-app purchases at $100.00, $200.00 and $500.00, and OpenAI's help center lists the same three monthly prices. Checked on 6 November 2026.

Does ChatGPT Go cost the same in the app?

Yes. The US App Store listing shows ChatGPT Go at $8.00 and OpenAI says Go costs $8 a month in the US. Outside the US, OpenAI prices Go by country, so compare the app price with chatgpt.com in your own currency.

Why does ChatGPT charge the same when Claude and YouTube charge more in the app?

Apple takes a commission on subscriptions sold inside an iOS app. Each company decides whether to pass it on. OpenAI absorbs it and keeps one price; Anthropic and Google raise the in-app price on some plans. The company's App Store page always shows what the in-app route costs, so you can check any app in twenty seconds.

Should I subscribe to ChatGPT in the app or on the web?

Price makes no difference, so choose by convenience. Subscribing in the app means Apple bills you and the plan shows in Settings, your name, Subscriptions, where you can cancel it. Subscribing on the web means OpenAI bills you and you manage it at chatgpt.com. Either way it works on every device you sign in to.
